Let’s start our discussion on heart rate monitors by explaining what they are and what they do for you.

Fundamentally, heart rate monitors (HRM) monitor your heart beat. That much can be ascertained from the name alone. But modern science has made them a lot smarter then that. The modern versions were designed primarily for the athlete. Those wishing to exercise, wanting to keep on eye on their vital signs as they worked out.

Traditionally, an HRM was designed to strap onto your chest to carry out its checks. It makes sense of course, because the closer the monitor is to your heart the more accurate the readings. Unfortunately, as athletes became more mobile, and the demand for HRM increased, the need for more portability increased. As a result, and with the advances in technology wrist monitors were born.

Initially, the wrist monitor still required a chest piece to communicate with, but over time, strapless one piece heart rate monitors were born the dispenses with the chest piece element altogether.
